Hardback Book Printing FAQ's
Hardback books, also known as case bound books, are bound with a hard-board cover that is usually covered with a cloth-like material or a printed cover. While many hardback books are produced with a sewn spine, we use glue to bind our hardbacks – a similar style to our paperbacks.
The board we use for our hardback books is a 2750 micron board. We then cover this board in 135gsm wibalin or cover the board with a printed cover which is then laminated. We have many different colours of wibalin to choose from, please contact us today to find out more email@example.com.
Our hardback book printing services include two options: cloth with a dust jacket or printed paper case (PPC).
For our cloth hardback books, we offer a range of Wibalin® colours, spine blocking (traditionally in gold or silver, but other colours are available on request), and a dust jacket (gloss or matt lamination) to protect the cover.
Our printed paper case (PPC) hardback books come with gloss or matt lamination for the cover.
The smallest size you can have your hardback is A6 (148 mm x 105 mm). The largest size is 291 mm x 205 mm (portrait) or 297 mm x 210 mm (landscape).
The size you will want to print your hardback will depend on a few different factors. To get more of an understanding of what size may be best for your hardback book, have a look at our Book Sizes blog.
We have many different types of paper to choose from for your hardback book. Our coated papers are fantastic for photobooks. If you are having a fiction book then the Bookwove papers we have on offer will be a good choice.
Much of the paper we have in stock is fine to use for your hardbacks; however, we have found that heavyweight coated stock such as the 170gsm matt or gloss paper tends to affect the opening of the book.
If you require a coated paper stock, we advise to go no thicker than 130gsm, that way we can ensure your hardback still opens up nicely.
If you need help deciding on what papertype to choose for you book, get in contact today and send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
To produce a quality hardback book we need to have the spine width at a minimum size of 9mm. This is roughly 50 to 60 pages. To find out the spine size for your hardback book you can use our Spine Width Calculator.
We have many differnt custom options you can have with your hardback book; head and tail bands, marker ribbons and foil blocking. We also have several custom options which are also available with our paperback books; custom end papers, colour plate inserts, randomoly placed colour, cover embossing and debossing and spot UV.
