What types of journals can you print?

We specialise in printing various journals, catering to various needs and themes. Alongside academic journals, we are adept at creating custom journals such as self-help journals, personal diaries, business journals, and specialised thematic journals like travel, wellness, or hobby-related. Our services are not limited to conventional types; we embrace unique and creative ideas to meet your journaling needs, ensuring each project is tailored to your vision. What size can my journal book be?

Journals can come in many sizes. Our minimum size for a paperback journal is A6 (148mm x 105mm) and the maximum size we can bind is 320 x 320mm. A standard printed journal is in the region of 216 x 138mm to 250 x 175mm.

For hardback journals, the smallest size you can have is A6 (148 x 105 mm). The largest size is 291 x 205mm (portrait) or 210 x 297 mm (landscape).

Our hardback books have a 3mm overhang on the top and bottom and 5mm overhang on the fore-edge. This means if you wish to have an A5 hardback book, the internal pages will be 210 x 148mm and the finished book with the cover will be 216 x 153mm.

What customisation is available?

We offer extensive customisation options to make your journal truly unique. In addition to standard customisations like paper type, size, and lamination, we can enhance your journal with advanced features such as:

Gatefolds: For an impactful presentation, especially useful in art journals or where large format visuals are involved.
Foil Blocking: Adds a luxurious and eye-catching touch to your journal’s cover, ideal for titles or special designs.
Embossing: This creates a raised effect on the cover, adding texture and a sophisticated look.
Spot UV: This coating technique highlights specific areas of your journal cover with a glossy finish, contrasting with the matte background.
Binding Options: Choose from flexible paperback bindings for a classic feel, or opt for durable hardbacks. We also offer sewn hardback books for superior durability and an elegant finish.

Can I get a sample of my Journal?

Yes, we strongly recommend obtaining a proof of your journal before proceeding with a large order. This proof serves as a sample and is an integral step to ensure that the final product aligns with your expectations. Typically, preparing this proof takes a couple of days. Reviewing a proof allows you to check and confirm every aspect of the journal, from the quality of the paper and printing to the accuracy of the design and layout. This process is designed to give you peace of mind and confidence in the quality of your order before full-scale production begins.

What will the spine width be for a paperback or hardback journal?

Perfect bound paperbacks come with a minimum spine width of 3 mm, which roughly equates to a 36-page book printed on our 80gsm munken bookwove paper. The maximum spine width is 50 mm which when printed on our 80gsm bookwove paper would equate to roughly 720 pages or 950 pages when printed on our 80gsm opaque paper.

To produce a quality hardback book we need to have the spine width at a minimum size of 9mm. This is roughly 50 to 60 pages. To find out the spine size for your hardback book you can use our spine width calculator.

What cover stock do you use for journal books?

For our paperback covers, we use 240gsm cover board; however, other thicknesses are available. After printing, we usually apply a laminate, this would be either a gloss or matt lamination. For hardback books we use a 135gsm coloured wibalin cover wrapped around a 2750 micron board or we can use a PPC cover wrapped around the same board instead of the coloured wibalin. We are able to offer extra unique touches to our covers such as spot UV, please enquire for more details.

What glue do you use?

Our books use two types of glue depending on the paper used. For regular uncoated paper, we use EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) and for coated papers or uncoated paper where the print bleeds into the spine of the book, we use PUR (Polyurethane Reactive). PUR is a stronger and more durable glue than EVA but it is also more expensive. We have had no issue using EVA glue with our uncoated paperback books, we have been doing it this way for over 20 years and it does mean we are able to have a cheaper manufacturing process.

Recently completed my father's memoirs with Imprint Digital and couldn't recommend them highly enough. We worked with Evie, who was a pleasure to deal with, and made the whole process very straight forward. They sent out a physical proof of the book which allowed us to make final tweaks and gave us great peace mind about the final product. The book production has a real wow factor and has been much commented on. It looks as good if not better than most professional autobiographies I have read. It's a minefield for the uninitiated to select a company to print your book, but I would not hesitate to recommend them or work with them again in the future.

Do you accept word files?

All files should be sent to us as press-ready PDF files. If you are unable to send files in this format then a word file for your manuscript can be sent. We will convert this file into a PDF file and send it back to you for checking. If you are happy then we can proceed to print.

Do you offer print-on-demand?

We do not offer print on demand. We are a short-run printing company and produce books from as little as 10 copies. Unlike print on demand, we do not have any high setup cost and ordering copies of your book from 100 copies will get you a very competitive unit cost.

How much does it cost to print a book?

All books that we print come in different shapes and sizes, paper types, cover laminations and have many different options you can add to make your book unique. If you want to find out how much your book will be to print please visit our online quote calculator.

How do I place an order?

Orders can be placed on our website via our online quote/order form here. We are also able to accept orders by email as long as you know all the specifications of your book. If you are unsure of what specifications you would like for your book, please contact us.

What book sizes can I print?

Due to our specialist equipment and the time we have invested in becoming the specialist book printer in the UK we are able to print any size book between A6 (148 x 105mm) and A4 landscape (210 x 297mm). This means you can print your book at standard book sizes or you can have your book in a custom size.

How long will it take to get my books?

This depends on a variety of factors but in most cases, paperback books are printed and shipped within 5 to 7 working days and hardback books are shipped within 4 weeks depending on the quantity. Please contact us if you have an urgent delivery timeframe.

Can you produce bound proofs?

Yes, we offer bound proofs for paperback books and hardback books. Please note that most of our hardback bound proofs are bound up as paperback books with a sample cover. We do this in order to get the proof copy out to you quickly and keep costs low. We can produce a complete hardback bound proof but the shipping time on this proof will be greater than our usual 1 to 3 days and may include an additional cost.

Do you print books abroad?

No, we don't, we print all books in-house in our production facility in Exeter. We don’t sub out any printing work to other printers or to any company abroad. Some extras such as foiling are sent out to a specialist company that we have been working with for several years.
