You will need to allow a minimum of 3 mm of bleed on each edge of your cover. For example, an A5 (210 mm × 148 mm book) will end up being 216 x 302 mm + the width of the spine.
Note: the extra bleed margin is trimmed off in the binding process so please allow for this when positioning cover images and text. See example below using a 6 mm spine.

Minimum hardback measurements are 148 mm × 105 mm and the maximum are 291 mm ×205 mm (portrait) or 210 mm x 297 mm (landscape).
For the height, add 3 mm board overhang top and bottom and 20 mm of bleed area to wrap around the board. For the width, you will need to account for the 8 mm hinge either side of the spine and add the 20 mm bleed area to wrap around the board.
Need help with the layout of your dustjacket for print? You can either click on and look at the image on the right or download our template and help guide below.
You will need to allow for the dustjacket flaps, folding around the boards spine width, and the width from spine to board edge. This can be calculated as follows:
Jacket Height – page height + 3 mm top and bottom for board overhang + a further 3 mm top and bottom for bleed.
Jacket width – 3 mm bleed, flaps to suit (usually half page width), width from spine to board edge is page width +8 mm, spine width given from our calculator +5 to allow for wrapping around the boards.
See example below for an A5 (210×148) book with 11 mm spine.
